An Interdisciplinary Conference
August 3-6, 1995

at Santa Cruz


The Dickens Project of the University of California announces an
interdisciplinary conference on Victorian Mind to be held 3-6 August 1995 on
the Santa Cruz Campus.  The keynote speaker will be Garrett Stewart. We
invite proposals for twenty-minute papers on any topic related to the
conference theme, including papers on Victorian writers other than Dickens.
Possible topics for conference panels include the following:

"The Victorian Mind":
New problems in intellectual history
The character of an age
Victorian philosophy and philosophers

The "Deviant" Mind:
The history/invention of madness
Inversions and Conversions
Hysteria and narrative
Secrecy and Confession

The Gendered Mind:
The gendering of subjectivity
The problem of female intellect
Darwin and the "science" of gender difference

The Growth of the Mind:
Autobiography and memory
Romanticism and Victorian consciousness
Education and enlightenment
Literature and/of subjectivity

Mind/Body/Spirit:
Phrenology and the sciences of the mind
Mechanics of consciousness
Spiritualism and spirituality

Two-page proposals will be accepted through 10 February 1995. Address
