Call For Papers
"Dickens, Empire, and Children"
Rhodes University
An international conference on "Dickens, Empire, and the Child" will
be held in Grahamstown, South Africa, from 2-5 September 1966 on
Rhodes University campus. Registration on Monday morning, and lectures
and panels until Thursday evening. The conference is being planned in
co-operation with the University of California Dickens Project.
The convenors invite papers on any topic related to their theme;
the three terms of the title are meant to be suggestive rather than
restrictive: papers need not address all three aspects.
Possible topics include:
Children in Dickens's novels
Children in novels of empire
Juvenile literature of empire
Dickens and empire
Dickens and race
Dickens and his colonial and post-colonial literary heirs (North
American, Caribbean, African, South Pacific etc)
Imperial myths of childhood
Colonial and post-colonial narratives of childhood
Children in the imperical city
Homes and homelessness in the empire
Exile and return
Please submit papers (or 300-word proposals) suitable for delivery in 30
minutes, plus curriculum vitae and bibliography to

DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSION OF PROPOSALS: 15 January 1966 (or sooner!)
Notification of acceptance despatched by early March. All papers will
be presented in English.
International travel costs at delegates' own expense.
Visitors who do not wish to give papers but who would like to attend
will be most welcome - please send details.
