Subject: Re: "Boz" and "Because"

Well, I haven't lived all over the U.S, but in the admittedly limited
sphere of the SF Bay Area, where I've always lived, "because" is pronounced
as a rhyme with "buzz" pretty frequently--hence, it seems to me, the common
(if regrettable) shortening of the former into "'cuz" in colloqiual speech,
in popular music (both rock and rap), and in works of American literature
which seek to reflect usage common in popular patois. Maybe it's a
California thing, but I suspect not; I suspect, rather, that this
pronunciation is more common in younger crowds than in older and,
especially, more educated ones. Of course, the only relevance to Dickens
here--and it's pretty oblique--is the analogy of "'cos" as a form that pops
up in his works, usually through the mouths of urchins or other
underschooled urbanites.

Phonologically yours,
Ryan
